Sempervirens Fund

The wonderful organization that helped PCA to be!!

Over ten years ago Sempervirens contacted Randy Bennett, co-founder of PCA, to be the caretaker of the camp that is now the Field Research Station! I guess you could say the rest is history! Or maybe I just say that because Randy could tell you the story so much better then me! I think I see a future blog post!

Anyway, Sempervirens is a great organization that began with Redwood trees, and a man named Andrew P. Hill who thought that the public needed to be able to experience these amazing trees! If you ever get a chance to meet Sempervirens Fund Executive Director Reed Holderman, be sure to ask him about the organizations history, he’ll love to tell you! In the meantime, read about their fascinating history here.

In the beginning starting the wonderful park Big Basin State Redwoods was the organizations main focus. Today they are continuing their conservation efforts all along the Santa Cruz Mountains, and most importantly the Gazos wildlife corridor, where the Field Research Station is located.

In addition to preserving the Santa Cruz Mountains Redwood forests, sempervirens also leads hikes.

Some of my own pictures out in Big Basin while horseback riding:

Hope you enjoy learning about Sempervirens Fund as much as me!

Festival Recap

So I am just now recovering from the Pescadero Arts and Fun Festival! I have always helped out with the setting up, running and cleanup of the festival, so to add in the PCA booth this year was pretty hectic, but I think worth it!

On Saturday I just set up the table with some pictures and articles of stuff around camp, most of which I got off our website (if you haven't already bowse around at gazos.org!). It was a bit boring, but informitive.
On Sunday I set out the leaf printing supplies and had a blast doing some leaf printings! Cody arrived not long after and took over the most of the rest of the day. I checked in from time to time and John stopped by briefly.
The kids had a great time doing the leaf printings! I will try to upload some pictures to post on here!

I did tell quite a few people that I would be posting a schedule of our upcoming field lecture series, so that is going to be a main topic for tomorrows meeting. I am hoping to be able to put together a schedule by the end of the week to send out.

It was very exciting to get to meet some of the people who came by. Some knew of us through the field lecture series, some knew nothing about us and some used to be involved with PCA.
I am glad we are able to bring peoples interest back to us and hopefully get them involved so we can continue on our path.

Send me a line if you have any questions!

Pescadero Conservation Alliance is now online!

PCA is now online, both with a website, a facebook page and now a blog! Hey we might get really crazy and start a twitter! Of course we would need things to tweet about, and that is just the problem right now.
Two years ago after my mom and co-founder of PCA, Debbie Bennett, passed away, PCA kinda took a backburner in many of our lives. However, we can not forget our origonal mission, the environment is not saving itself nor is it broadcasting news about itself on Yahoo. We need to be out there researching it and educating the next generation as well as doing what we can to reverse any ill effects by our conservation efforts.
Although the real involvment will always be out in the field, I hope you will use these online resources to keep up to date on PCA and other environmental news and organizations ( I will do my best to collect interesting and relevent info).

Please leave a comment, I am very open to suggestion and feel free to e-mail me or facebook me if you are interested in more info!
